Apex Legends FAQ & Troubleshooting Guide

Cause 1: Crossplay is Disabled

Fix: Go to Settings > Gameplay > Cross Platform Play > make sure it's set to "Enabled". If crossplay is disabled, you won't be able to see or add friends from other platforms, and your friend requests may not appear.

Cause 2: Wrong Friend ID / EA ID

Fix: Make sure you're searching for your friend's EA ID (in-game name), NOT their PlayStation Network ID, Xbox Gamertag, or Steam username. Apex Legends uses EA accounts for cross-platform friends. Ask your friend for their exact EA ID (capitalization matters) and search for that in the in-game Friends tab > Add Friend.

Cause 3: Friend Request in Wrong Tab

Fix: Friend requests may be in a separate tab. Open the Friends tab (top-right corner) and look for: (1) "Friend Requests" tab — incoming requests may be here, (2) "Sent Requests" tab — check if your request was sent but not accepted, (3) Make sure you're not looking at the "Recent Players" or "Blocked" tabs by mistake.

Cause 4: Privacy Settings Blocking Requests

Fix: Check your EA account privacy settings. Go to myaccount.ea.com > Privacy Settings > make sure "Can receive friend requests" is enabled and your profile is not set to "Hidden" or "Friends Only" in a way that blocks incoming requests. Also check platform-level privacy settings (PSN/Xbox/Steam) to make sure friend requests are allowed.

Cause 5: EA Account Not Linked / Link Issue

Fix: If your platform account (PSN/Xbox/Steam) is not properly linked to your EA account, friend requests may not work correctly. Go to myaccount.ea.com > Connections > verify that your platform accounts are properly linked. If there's a linking issue, you may need to unlink and relink your account (note: this can only be done once every 6 months for some platforms, so contact EA Help if needed).

Cause 6: Server / Connection Issues

Fix: Sometimes friend requests don't appear due to server issues or connection problems. Try: (1) Restart the game, (2) Check the Apex Legends server status, (3) Switch to a different data center (main menu > Data Center), (4) Check your internet connection, (5) If using a VPN, try disabling it. If the issue persists, it may be a temporary server problem that resolves on its own.

Cause 7: Blocked / Muted Player

Fix: If you or your friend have blocked each other (even accidentally), friend requests won't work. Check your Blocked Players list: Friends tab > Blocked Players. If your friend is there, unblock them. Also ask your friend to check their blocked list for your name.

1. New Player Protection (First 10-20 Matches)

New players (accounts below a certain level, typically level 10-20) are placed in lobbies with a higher proportion of bots to help them learn the game without being immediately destroyed by experienced players. These bots are relatively easy to kill and have predictable behavior. As you level up and play more matches, the number of bots in your lobbies decreases significantly.

2. Low-Population Regions / Off-Peak Hours

In regions with smaller player populations (e.g., South America, parts of Asia, Oceania) or during off-peak hours (late night/early morning), the game may use bots to fill lobbies when there aren't enough human players to start a match quickly. This is more common in ranked mode at very high ranks (Master/Predator) where the player pool is small.

3. How to Identify Bots

Bots in Apex Legends have several telltale signs: (1) They have generic or randomly generated names (often with numbers), (2) They move in predictable, robotic patterns (running in straight lines, standing still, not using cover effectively), (3) They have poor aim and often miss shots, (4) They don't use legend abilities or use them ineffectively, (5) They don't communicate or ping, (6) They may loot in unusual patterns or ignore high-tier loot. Note that some human players may also exhibit these behaviors (especially new players), so it's not always easy to tell.

4. Are Bots in Ranked Mode?

Bots are generally not present in ranked mode at most ranks (Bronze through Diamond). However, at very high ranks (Master and Apex Predator), where the player pool is small, the game may occasionally use bots to fill lobbies and reduce queue times. This is relatively rare and primarily affects the highest skill tiers. In most ranked matches (Bronze through Diamond), all players are human.

How EAC Works in Apex Legends

Easy Anti-Cheat runs at the kernel level (deep within your operating system) to detect cheating software, memory manipulation, aimbots, wallhacks, speedhacks, and other unauthorized modifications. EAC is installed automatically when you install Apex Legends and runs in the background while you play. It scans for known cheating software, monitors game memory for unauthorized modifications, and can detect suspicious behavior patterns. EAC also has a hardware ID (HWID) ban system that can ban cheaters' hardware components (not just their accounts) to prevent them from creating new accounts.

Does Apex Legends Detect External Devices?

Apex Legends' anti-cheat can detect some external devices and software, but not all. Here's what you need to know: (1) Cronus Zen / CronusMax / XIM Apex: These controller adapters (which can be used for aim assist manipulation or macros) are generally not detected by EAC as cheating software because they emulate legitimate controller inputs. However, Respawn has taken action against players using these devices for unfair advantages in some cases, and their use may violate the game's Terms of Service. (2) Mouse and keyboard on console via adapters: As discussed in our settings guide, KBM adapters on console are not detected as cheats by EAC, but players using them are placed in controller lobbies with aim assist, which some consider unfair. (3) Aimbots / wallhacks / memory editors: These are actively detected and banned by EAC. (4) Macros / auto-clickers: Some macros may be detected, especially if they automate gameplay in ways that give an unfair advantage.

Ban Policy & Appeal Process

Apex Legends has a strict anti-cheat policy. Bans can be temporary (for first offenses or minor violations) or permanent (for severe or repeated cheating). Permanent bans can include account bans, hardware ID (HWID) bans, and IP bans. If you believe you were falsely banned, you can appeal through the EA Help ban appeal page. Note that EAC bans are generally not reversed unless there's a clear false positive. To avoid bans: don't use cheating software, don't use unauthorized third-party tools that modify game files or memory, don't share accounts, and be cautious about what software you run while playing (some legitimate software can trigger false positives if they interact with game memory).
