How to Unlock Legends

There are two main ways to unlock legends in Apex Legends:

Method 1: Legend Tokens (Free)

  • Earned by leveling up your account (600 tokens per level)
  • Each legend costs 12,000 Legend Tokens
  • Also earned from battle pass rewards and events
  • Cannot be purchased with real money
  • Go to Legends tab → select locked legend → "Unlock with Tokens"

Method 2: Apex Coins (Premium)

  • Premium currency purchased with real money
  • Each legend costs 750 Apex Coins (~$7.50 USD)
  • Also earned from battle pass (free track gives some coins)
  • Can be used for skins, battle passes, and cosmetics too
  • Go to Legends tab → select locked legend → "Unlock with Coins"
Free legends: The base game includes several legends unlocked from the start: Bangalore, Bloodhound, Gibraltar, Lifeline, Pathfinder, and Wraith. Caustic and Mirage can be unlocked early with Legend Tokens. Check the in-game store for occasional free legend unlock events.

How to Get Legend Tokens in Apex Legends

Legend Tokens are the free currency used to unlock legends. Here's how to earn them efficiently:

1

Level Up Your Account

The primary way to earn Legend Tokens is by leveling up. From level 4 onwards, you earn 600 Legend Tokens per level. At level 20, you'll have enough for your first legend (12,000 tokens). Keep playing matches to gain XP and level up.

2

Complete Daily and Weekly Challenges

Daily challenges reset every 24 hours and award bonus XP. Weekly challenges offer larger XP rewards. Completing challenges accelerates your leveling speed, which means more Legend Tokens over time.

3

Battle Pass Rewards

Both the free and premium battle pass tracks include Legend Token rewards at certain tiers. The free track typically offers 1,200-2,400 tokens per season, while the premium track offers more. You don't need to buy the pass to earn the free track rewards.

4

Limited-Time Events

Collection events and themed events sometimes include Legend Token rewards in their prize tracks or as login bonuses. Log in during events to claim these bonus tokens.

Important: Legend Tokens cannot be purchased with real money. The only way to get them is through gameplay. Save your tokens for legends you really want — each costs 12,000 tokens, which takes about 20 levels to earn. You can check your token balance in the top-right corner of the main menu or in the Store tab.

FAQ

Who is the best legend in Apex Legends?+
The "best" legend depends on your playstyle, team composition, and the current meta. For general effectiveness, top picks include Bloodhound (scanning/recon), Gibraltar (defensive tank), Wraith (aggressive flanker), and Bangalore (versatile assault). For beginners, Bangalore, Lifeline, and Gibraltar are the most forgiving. The most important factor is picking a legend you enjoy and mastering their kit.
How do I unlock legends in Apex Legends?+
Legends are unlocked using either Legend Tokens (12,000 per legend, earned by leveling up) or Apex Coins (750 per legend, premium currency). Go to the Legends tab in the main menu, select a locked legend, and choose your unlock method. The base game includes 8 legends unlocked from the start (Bangalore, Bloodhound, Caustic, Gibraltar, Lifeline, Mirage, Pathfinder, Wraith), though Caustic and Mirage may require tokens on some platforms.
How do I get Legend Tokens?+
Legend Tokens are earned primarily by leveling up your account (600 tokens per level from level 4 onwards). You can also earn tokens from battle pass rewards (both free and premium tracks) and limited-time events. Legend Tokens cannot be purchased with real money — they must be earned through gameplay. At 600 tokens per level, you need about 20 levels to afford one legend (12,000 tokens).
How many legends are in Apex Legends?+
As of the latest seasons, Apex Legends features over 25 playable legends across 5 classes: Assault, Skirmisher, Recon, Support, and Controller. New legends are typically added at the start of each season (approximately every 3 months), with occasional reworks and balance changes to existing characters. Check the in-game Legends tab for the most up-to-date roster.
Can I change my legend's abilities?+
No, each legend has a fixed set of abilities (tactical, ultimate, and passive) that cannot be changed or customized. However, you can customize your legend's appearance with skins, banners, poses, and other cosmetics. Some legends have received ability reworks in seasonal updates, but these changes apply to all players and cannot be opted out of.
